How the Hell Do We Celebrate "Freedom" When Our Freedoms Are Being Burned to the Ground?
Jul 04, 2025
Today is the Fourth of July. Supposedly a day to celebrate freedom and independence in the United States. But I have to be honest with you—I’m not feeling it.
Not when Roe v. Wade was overturned three years ago and red states continue to outdo each other in stripping away bodily autonomy from anyone with a uterus.
Not when billionaires just got another goddamn tax cut yesterday while our elders, our children, and our neighbors are about to lose Medicaid, Medicare, and SNAP.
Not when ICE agents are kidnapping people of color without due process and throwing them into prison camps.
Tell me—how are we supposed to celebrate freedom when we’re watching fascism sharpen its claws in real time?
Witches Don’t Look Away—We Rise
Witchcraft, at its core, is about reclaiming power. It’s about saying fuck this noise to oppressive systems and creating our own magic-fueled path forward. It’s ancestral. It’s radical. It’s deeply political.
So no, we don’t get the luxury of pretending everything is fine just because there are fireworks in the sky and flags on every lawn. But we also don’t give up. We fight back—in our own way, with our own tools.
Let’s talk about how.
🕯️ Step 1: Ground Your Rage
You are allowed to be angry. You should be angry. But you can’t let that fire burn you alive. You’ve got to ground it.
Try this:
-
Barefoot in dirt, grass, sand, or saltwater. Let the earth hold you.
-
Light a black candle and say this aloud:
“My rage is sacred. My fire is holy. May it fuel resistance, not destruction.”
Anchor yourself in the truth that your anger is valid—but it needs direction.
✊ Step 2: Pick One Battle
You cannot save the whole world by yourself. You’re not supposed to. But you can choose one place to show up.
-
Volunteer at a reproductive justice organization
-
Help register people to vote (especially in swing states)
-
Donate to abortion funds, legal aid, or bail funds
-
Support immigrant protection networks in your area
-
Call your reps weekly, even if they’re trash—make their lives hell
-
Mentor younger activists. Share what you know.
Witches don’t just hex the system—they build alternatives.
🪄 Step 3: Use Your Magic for Mutual Aid
This is the time to practice community magic. Not just spells for personal abundance or peace—but spells for collective survival.
Some ideas:
-
Monthly protection spell for your community: Charge rainwater or moon water and distribute it to those who need strength and safety.
-
Sigils of safety or invisibility: Slip one into a protester’s pocket or tape it under a car dashboard.
-
Candle rituals for justice: Work in groups to raise energy for specific causes. Multiply your intention.
Magic is real. So is mutual aid.
🔮 Step 4: Refuse to Normalize Fascism
You don’t owe anyone your silence. Call out injustice at your job, in your family, in your neighborhood. If you have privilege—use it. If you have a platform—use it.
And for the love of all that is sacred, don’t check out. I know it’s tempting. The heartbreak is heavy. But that’s how fascism wins—when we go numb.
Spell for staying awake:
Every morning, say:
“I will not look away.
I will not numb myself to evil.
I will find beauty, and I will fight for it.”
🌙 Remember: Resistance Is a Ritual
You are not powerless. You are part of a lineage of wise women, healers, rebels, and witches who have been here before. They resisted. So can we.
On this so-called Independence Day, light a candle not for the country we were told to love, but for the people we are fighting for. The future we’re conjuring. The ancestors who stand behind us.
We’re not here to pretend everything’s fine.
We’re here to hex, heal, and hold the line.
